Okay, so this book had a head start with me, because I love alligators and crocodiles, so any picture book where they're a main character already has a leg up. But I knew I had to check it out when I saw all the accolades that Snappsy the Alligator (Did Not Ask to Be in This Book!) by Julie Falatko and Tim Miller was receiving, and it's a good thing I did, because it's definitely one of my favorites of the year. Why? Well, it's got Snappsy, a charming (and misunderstood) alligator who wears a tie. It breaks the fourth wall, with Snappsy often directly addressing the narrator who tends to misrepresent him throughout the book -- a book Snappsy never wanted to be in in the first place. It has fun illustrations, funny and engaging language, and just the right amount of absurdism. And it uses all those elements to cleverly arrive at a message about friendship and inclusivity in a natural, satisfying way. All around, a winner in my book.
