Audrie and Daisy: Sexual Assault, Bullying and Social Media

Wed, 03/01/2017 -
6:00pm to 8:30pm
East Lansing Public Library - Community Room

Join us for a screening of Audrie and Daisy, followed by a panel discussion with experts who deal with issues of sexual assault within our community every day.

Audrie and Daisy is an urgent real-life drama that examines the ripple effects on families, friends, schools and communities when two underage young women find that sexual assault crimes against them have been caught on camera. From acclaimed filmmakers Bonni Cohen and Jon Shenk, Audrie and Daisy — which made its world premiere at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival — takes a hard look at American's teenagers who are coming of age in this new world of social media bullying, spun wildly out of control.

The discussion panel will include Tashmica Torok from the Firecracker Foundation, Detective Sam Miller from the Michigan State University (MSU) Police Department, Sgt. Jeff Thomas from the East Lansing Police Department, Harriet McTigue from the Sexual Assault Program at MSU, and Kimberly Hack from End Violent Encounters (EVE).

East Lansing Public Library - Community Room

We are partnering with the All Of Us Express Children's Theatre this month to discuss the classic Lois Lowry book, Number the Stars. All Of Us Express will perform a stage adaptation of this title at the Hannah Community Center on February 3rd & 10th at 7 p.m. and February 4th & 11th at 2 and 4:30 p.m. The first 15 participants to sign up will also receive a free ticket to a performance along with their copy of the book!

Number the Stars is the story of ten year old Annemarie Johansen and her family as they witness the Danish resistance to German troops' relocation of the Jewish population in Denmark in 1943. When they take in Annemarie's Jewish friend, they must conceal her true identity and eventually make their way across the sea to Sweden and safety.

Join us to discuss this book and enjoy bagels from Panera. The first 15 to register for Books & Bagels at the library will receive a free copy of the book.

Immediately prior to January's Books & Bagels session, we will also be holding a script reading and discussion with cast and crew from All Of Us Express. Be sure to join us at 1:00 p.m. for this unique opportunity!
