Donations to the Library

Remember… Honor… Celebrate…

Choosing to add a book or other material to the library’s collection is a wonderful way to:

  • Remember a family member. Was your loved one a history buff? An avid gardener? A gourmet cook? Did he or she have a favorite author? You can remember special people with books or other materials in subject areas that matched their interests.
  • Honor a valued friend or co-worker. Do you have a special co-worker or volunteer that you would like to recognize for their efforts? Or maybe a long-time club or board member? Or perhaps you’d like to thank business colleagues or customers for their support.
  • Celebrate a special occasion. Is there a new baby in the family? Is Grandma celebrating a milestone birthday? Or maybe there’s a high school or college graduation coming up? Give books or other materials in celebration of these and other special occasions.

 Here’s how it works:

  • You can download the library’s Gift/Memorial Donation Form to make your tax-deductible gift.
  • One of our librarians will select a book or other material to recognize the person or event.
  • If you wish, a bookplate identifying the person or organization being recognized, and recognizing you as the donor, can be placed in the book.
  • A letter announcing your gift will be sent to the individual or family you indicate on the form.
  • Checks should be made out to the East Lansing Public Library.
  • Send donations to:

    East Lansing Public Library
    950 Abbot Rd.
    East Lansing, MI 48823.

**Please note that as a donation to a Michigan public library, a 50% credit of your donation may be deducted from Michigan income tax (Maximum of $100 for individuals). Donations

Your gift benefits the community as well as your pocketbook. Federal law allows for a deduction of the entire donation if you itemize your deductions. In Michigan, you receive a credit of 50% of the contribution directly off of your income tax after you have taken all your deductions. The credit is capped at $100 for an individual and $200 for a married couple. Business taxpayers can also benefit by making a charitable contribution to the Library and claim a credit against the tax imposed by the Michigan Business Tax Act. As always, it is important to consult your tax expert for information and advice. All of your contributions are important to the Library now and throughout the year.

You receive a credit of 50% of the contribution directly off your Michigan income tax for donations to Michigan public libraries, public broadcasting stations, and colleges and universities (Maximum of $100 for single return/ $200 for joint return).

This credit comes off of your tax after you have taken all your deductions. Donations also count as "Gifts of Charity" in the Federal Tax Code if you itemize your deductions.
