2023 Fiction Writing Contest

Congratulations to the winners of the 2023 Fiction Writing Contest, co-hosted by ELPL and the MSU Community Writing Center!

The winner of the youth category is Annie Lloyd. Annie is a homeschooled fifth grader who enjoys camping and spending time at her grandpa’s blue farm house in northern Michigan, where she frequently spots turkeys (and gets ideas for her stories!). She is always looking for ways to help animals and preserve the environment. Annie also enjoys playing soccer, running, and playing with her Black Lab Maisie who she based one of her story characters off of. She would like to thank her big sister Eliza for helping her with the writing process and her twin sister Katie for always encouraging her. Protecting The Swamp was a really fun story to write and Rosemary hopes others enjoy reading about the fictional battle of a swamp in Ireland. The winner of the adult category is Halle Mikula. Halle is a 19 year-old fiction writer majoring in English at Michigan State University.  Her short story, "The Red Summer," is an ode to grief, love, and the things that tie us together. Halle plans to expand upon the characters and concepts within this narrative - which have been floating around her head since her sophomore year of high school - to finally create her first novel, Brinkley.
