Director’s Corner: Planning for Our Future

Those who know me have heard me say that I’m a bit of a strategic plan geek. I love learning all about my community, coming up with big ideas together, and turning it all into something actionable. When I first came across the ELPL Director job posting, I was so excited to hear that the library was just starting a strategic planning process, and since being hired, I have been honored to guide this process.

On March 17, just over a year since I began at ELPL, we were thrilled to finally unveil our new strategic plan! This plan will guide our decisions about budget, programs, partnerships, and other services for the next few years. The plan identified three strategic priority areas: igniting collaborations and partnerships, expanding our mindsets and operations, and fostering belonging. These priorities were based on tons of community feedback; we received help from over 1250+ people! Big thanks to everyone who participated in the planning process, and thanks to everyone who came to our unveiling party as well. We’re super excited to get to work and bring our community’s library dreams to life.

Over the next few months, we’ll be updating our website with an Action Plan, which will show the specific activities we’ll pursue to make progress in our priority areas. We’ll also add our measurement plan, so you can track our progress in real time. Everything you need to know about the new strategic plan can be found on our website, and it will be continuously updated as our plans grow and change.

With such a supportive East Lansing community, and such a great team of library staff, I’m confident that our library will only continue to grow and thrive over the next few years. We’ve put in a lot of hard work over the last year, and we’ll be ready to hit the ground running when the plan officially launches on July 1. I can’t wait to see what we create together!
