Libraries across the state and the country have been going fine free for a few years. I am excited to announce that the East Lansing Public Library will be fine free starting on July 1, 2020. As the East Lansing Public Library Board of Trustees look at making the library a more inclusive and equitable organization, removing the barrier of fines is a good step to making the library more accessible to our patrons.
Patrons who keep items long past their overdue date will still be charged for the cost of the item. However, once that item is returned that charge will be erased. This is to ensure that the library's collection is readily available to all library patrons.
We eliminated fines on children’s cards a few years ago and we have never charged fines on digital items. This is the next step in helping the library to provide free access to information and knowledge.
