Christmas came a bit early for Doppsee, one of Potter Park's black rhinos, when she gave birth to a baby boy on December 24, opens a new window. Make sure to click through to Potter Park's website for some seriously cute baby rhino pictures!, opens a new window
This is Doppsee's first pregnancy and a first for the zoo as well. In its 100 year history this is the first time a black rhino calf has been born at the zoo. This is important because, according to Potter Park's website,
"...Black rhinos are critically endangered...Current estimates show that only about 5,000 individual black rhinos are alive in the wild today."
The baby is not yet on display but this is an otherwise great time to visit the zoo with temps for the next few days in the mid to high 40s. ELPL has zoo passes for check-out to help everyone visit the zoo.
Congratulations Doppsee and welcome to Lansing Baby Boy!
