ELPL is excited to collaborate with East Lansing High School's Black Student Union to present a Natural Haircare Drive for the months of February, March, and April! Until April 30, there will be boxes around the library in order to collect haircare donations. The goal of this drive is to donate items for natural, afro-textured hair to the community, with all products going to Haven House, Hannah's House, Women's Center for Greater Lansing, and EVE (End Violent Encounters). For this drive, we are asking for the following donations:
- Shampoo and Conditioner (specific to afro-textured hair)
- Scalp Oils
- Moisturizers
- Deep/Leave-in Conditioner
- Large Hair Ties for Styling
- Durable Hair Brushes/Picks
- Wide Tooth Comb
- Silk/Satin Bonnets and Durags
If you are not sure if a product is correct, look out for the brands Carol's Daughter, Mielle, Shea Moisture, Camille Rose, Miss Jessie's, Aunt Jackies, Allaffia, and As I Am. These brands offer wonderful options for afro-textured hair and are well suited for natural hair types. You can also look for phrases like "sulfate-free," "paraben-free," and "phthalate-free" when searching for products, as some chemicals can be damaging and drying for different hair types. Other chemicals to avoid include sulfates, isopropyl alcohol, cetyl alcohol, ethanol, formaldehyde, parabens, and mineral oil, as these can also be damaging. With your help, we can help ensure our natural hair community has access to the necessary haircare products they need!
