November Newsletter: ELPL on the Road!
Check out what’s going on at the library in this month’s newsletter.
Featured: ELPL on the Road!
October was a busy month for getting out of the library and onto the road!
First, five of our staff members attended the Michigan Library Association (MLA) annual conference. It was a great opportunity to meet and learn from lots of other library workers! We were also proud that our staff presented several excellent sessions at the conference:
- “Mastering Your Messages for the Media and Beyond” - Kevin King, Library Director
- “Taking Flight: Launching and Maintaining a Successful Library Birding Program” - Dr. Eric Berling, STEAM Educator
- “Accessible Marketing Through a Trauma-Informed Lens” - Gabby Kindig, Communications Team Leader
- “Introducing Book Boxes: Amplify Your Reader's Advisory Service for Patrons!” - Storm Hawthorn, Teen Services & Schools Liaison Librarian
All in all, it was a successful conference, and we’re excited to bring what we learned to ELPL!
After MLA, ELPL staff members participated in the MSU Homecoming Parade. It was so much fun to cheer on MSU with everyone! Go green!
Later in October, we participated in WKAR’s “Be My Neighbor Day” at Impression 5. This was an opportunity for people to meet many of the organizations and resources in the Greater Lansing area. We shared some science demonstrations to show how a lot of our community helper vehicles (like fire trucks, garbage trucks, etc.) use hydraulics to get big jobs done, and we used stamps to create thank you cards for our community helpers and neighbors!
In addition to these big outreach events, we continued our regular outreach to retirement communities and apartment complexes in the Library on the Go!
And lastly, one of our programs hit the road with the formation of “ELPL Rides”! Each meeting of this casual bike-riding club began with a brief safety and informational talk, and then the group explored one of the many biking trails in East Lansing together. ELPL rides was a success and we are looking forward to an even better series starting next year. If your organization would like to participate in the planning committee for ELPL Rides, please reach out to Angelo!

- Existing organizational systems including Dewey Decimal System and Library of Congress Classification are inherently damaging to Indigenous people and are insufficient for accurately describing and providing access to Native topics. From 2019 to 2024, the Saginaw Chippewa Tribal Libraries worked with community members to create a new classification system, Maawn Doobiigeng (Gather Together). Members of the workgroup and library staff will share about the process of creating this new system, how it is being implemented, and how it is being used in the libraries.

Spotlight: Marsha’s Friendshop
If you’re the type to get butterflies in your stomach when the leaves start to change, it can only mean one thing; it’s officially curl-up-with-a-good-book season! And we have good news – the Friends of East Lansing Public Library run a used bookstore INSIDE the library, and they’re stocked with fall favorites, bestsellers, and hidden gems. The bookstore is open anytime the library is.
Whether you’re looking for a little treat for yourself, or a gift for a friend, there’s no arguing it – Marsha’s Friendshop is the place to go to find that perfect fall read. It’s time to grab a book -maybe three-, a cup of cider, hit “do not disturb” on your phone, and settle in for the coziest season yet.
