East Lansing Public Library Board of Trustees Meeting

The East Lansing Public Library occupies the ancestral, traditional and contemporary lands of the Anishinaabeg Three Fires confederacy of Ojibwe, Odawa and Potawatomi peoples land ceded in the 1819 Treaty of Saginaw.
1. Call to Order 4:30 p.m.
2. Roll Call
Trustees present were: Polly Synk, Amy Zaagman, Pamela Smith, Ameenah Asante and Diane Goddeeris. Also, in attendance were Friends President Maureen McCabe-Power, Director Kristin Shelley, Head of Customer Experiences/Assistant Director Brice Bush, and Executive Assistant to the Director Shori Teeple. There were two attendees from the public.

5.1 Public Comment - limited to two minutes per person

6.1 City Council Liaison Report:
- No report
6.2 Friends of the East Lansing Public Library Report
McCabe-Power Reported:
- Credit card reader at service desk now operational.
- Holiday items in shop and new cart with recent fiction have been popular.
- Purse donations have been slow; purse sale to take place February 25.
- End of year donations continuing to come in.
7. Old Business
7.1 Intellectual Freedom -- Discussion
- Shelley recently attended ThinkSpace conference in Grand Rapids with focus on Intellectual Freedom.
- Toolkit at MLA website available as a resource.
7.2 Patron Conduct -- Discussion
- Overviews shared teen behavior concerns during October and November.
- Meetings took place with school staff and community organizations.
- Students greeted by staff at front entrance, Patron Code of Conduct handed out, restroom doors propped open and other measures implemented.
7.3 Board Bylaws -- Discussion
- Discussion about changes to bylaws regarding public comment.
- Action item to change bylaws will be added to February agenda.
8. New Business
8.1 Resolution 02-23 to approve 2023 Library Board of Trustees Meeting Dates -- Action
- Motion amended by Synk to change start times to 4:45pm for February, March and April 2023 board meeting dates.

8.2 Resolution 03-23 to approve 2023 ELPL Holidays and Closures Schedule -- Action
- Motion amended by Synk to add two Saturday closures for December 23, 2023 and December 30, 2023.

8.3 Subcommittee to discuss Director's contract and performance
- Subcommittee will consist of Synk and Smith.

- Board training - Thursday January 26
- ELPL 100th Birthday Celebration event - Saturday March 11 from 11am-2pm
